TIMES 2 JuMP – Feasibility Study of migrating the TIMES code from GAMS to Julia-JuMP
This ETSAP research project assesses the feasibility of migrating the TIMES energy systems modelling framework from GAMS to Julia-JuMP, with the aim of reducing software licensing costs, improving accessibility, and supporting open-source modelling. Through prototype development, computational performance assessments, cost analysis, and consultations with the TIMES community, the study confirms that migration is technically feasible while identifying key challenges related to model compatibility, numerical validation, and long-term maintenance. The findings highlight the potential for greater flexibility, transparency, and cost efficiency, particularly for academic institutions and public-sector users. To support a reliable transition, the study proposes a phased 18-month development plan focused on performance optimization, full TIMES functionality, integration with existing tools, and community adoption.
