- The Annual Reports for 2023 and 2024 are now available. More information is available here.
- The IEA Energy Storage (ES TCP) Task 32 and ETSAP collaborated in developing an open-source modelling platform for energy storage. The report highlights the main findings, including data on energy storage technology characteristics and operation, as well as detailed energy storage models. It also includes a SubRES on how to model different energy storage technologies in TIMES. More information is available here.
- International Autumn School coordinated by Center for Applied Mathematics (CMA) Mines Paris was arranged in November 2023. More information is available here.
- The Annual Report for 2022 for Annex XV is now available to download.
- A TIMES/MIRO app has been developed which can serve as an open-source GUI to TIMES models, published under an open-source license on GitHub. More information is available here.
- International Autumn School on Prospective Model and Climate Change: Energy and Water Issues, to be held in Sophia-Antipolis, France on November 6th to 11th, 2023, jointly organized by ETSAP (IEA), The Transition Institute 1.5 and CMA Mines Paris – PSL. More information is available here.
- The next IEA-ETSAP workshop will take place on 16th – 17th November 2023 in Turin, Italy. Registration is open here.

- The third and final workshop on Human dimension and Energy trade in TIMES models will be held at the Luleå University of Technology (LTU) in Sweden the 21 st and 22 nd of March. More information available here.

- Webinar on Climate Variations, Fluctuations and Extremes impacts on future energy systems, organised by ETSAP with ISIMIP and CLIM2Power projects and hosted by the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University. The agenda is now available and the registration is open here.
- An online training for TIMES is scheduled on 22-24 March 2021. More information is available here.
- Webinar on Modelling clean energy transitions: approaches and tools for the World Energy Outlook and the Energy Technology Perspectives. Speakers: Dr. Stéphanie Bouckaert [Senior Energy Analyst – IEA] and Dr. Uwe Remme [Energy Analyst – IEA]. The registration is open here.
- Due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak the 2 nd International Summer School on prospective modeling and energy transition, planned for 15 to 20 June, is canceled and will be re-scheduled for the Summer of 2021.
- A Basic Training Course on VEDA TIMES will be offered in Santiago, Chile on 23 – 25 July 2019. Registration is now closed.
- PhD Summer Course on District regeneration decarbonising supply chains, 8th to 19th July in Bologna (1st week) and Lisbon/Almada (2nd week).
- ETSAP is hosting a session on Going beyond energy systems analysis: How can we make long-term energy scenarios more relevant to climate policy making in the Long-term Energy Scenario 2019 International Forum organised by IRENA in Berlin during 10 – 12 April 2019. For more details see here.

- IEA ETSAP is offering a basic training course in VEDA-TIMES at RUDN University in Moscow from 19th to 21st November 2018.
- The 74th Semi-Annual ETSAP workshop will be held on 7th – 9th November 2018, in Stuttgart, Germany, hosted by Institute of Energy Economics and the Rational Use of Energy (IER). Details for logistics and the meeting agenda is available here.
- Workshop Location. IER has reserved 50 rooms in the Campus guest hotel for ETSAP conference at a special rate (79€) if booked before 18.10.2018. For reservation/booking the room, please call or write a mail to the campus guest hotel.
- IEA-ETSAP will offer a training in Singapore on 12th – 14th September 2018 after the 5th Asian Energy Modelling Workshop. Registration is now closed.
- Next ETSAP ordinary workshop will be held on 17th and 18th June 2018 at Chalmers University of Technology (CHALMERS), Gothenburg, Sweden and the ExCo meeting on the afternoon 18th June 2018. The meeting final agenda is available here.
- Conference Announcement and Call for Session Proposals. The Scenarios Forum is open to anyone using, developing, or interested in scenarios to carry out research or policy analysis related to climate change and sustainability. Proposals for sessions are now being accepted, through June 15, 2018.
- ETSAP organises an introductory three-day TIMES training course in Gothenburg during 19-21 June 2018. Registration is now closed.
- ETSAP established the Tosato Grant in honour of Giancarlo Tosato (Operating Agent and Project Head for more than ten years). The grant will start in 2017 and will provide financial support for trainees to attend ETSAP’s training courses and the ETSAP workshop. Registration to trainings is available here.
- The IAMC and IIASA have launched a request for submissions of emission scenarios results relevant to the IPCC 2018 Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C (SR1.5). More information available here.
- IEA-ETSAP will present a session in the Astana EXPO 2017 Future Energy Forum on 11th August 2017 on GHG Emissions Pathways Analysis Using Scenarios and Integrated Climate Energy Strategies for GHG Emissions Reduction. Updated agenda available here.

- ETSAP in collaboration with the Gas Innovation Research Centre in the University of São Paulo is organising a workshop on Energy Systems Modeling on 30th Jan 2017 and a training session for TIMES on 31st Jan – 2nd Feb 2017. The Workshop agenda is available here.
- ETSAP is co-organising a workshop on Energy Systems Modeling together with the Resilience Engineering Research Centre of the University of Tokyo on 14th Dec, 2016. The workshop agenda is available here.
- The Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC) will hold its 9th Annual Meeting from December 5-7, 2016, in Beijing, China.
- Since September 2011, ETSAP E-TechDS is working in cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to develop and update briefs on renewable energy technologies.
- A discussion forum has been set up to facilitate multilateral discussions on various ETSAP issues. ETSAP members are encouraged to register and participate.
- The Joint Research Center/Institute of Energy and Transport has just published the ETRI 2014 Report, which provides up-to-date cost and performance characteristics of the present and future European energy technology portfolio until 2050.
- Submission of abstracts for the IAMC eighth annual meeting in Nov this year.
(Deadline of submission is end of July) More information are available here - The ADVANCE project, funded by the European Commission, has developed harmonized documentation of Integrated Assessment Models opened a public review process. Please see here for more details. Review comments should be sent via e-mail by 15 October 2015.
- The international workshop on Addressing flexibility in energy system models was held on December 4 and 5 2014 at the premises of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre – Institute for Energy and Transport in Petten, The Netherlands. Around 40 energy modelling experts and researchers from universities, research centres, the power industry, international organisations, and the European Commission (DGs ENER and JRC) met to present and discuss their views on the modelling of flexibility issues, the linkage of energy system models and sector-detailed energy models, the integration of high shares of variable renewable energy sources, and the representation of flexibility needs in power system models. The discussions took into account modelling and data-related methodological aspects, with their limitations and uncertainties, as well as possible alternatives to be implemented within energy system models. The report of the workshop, including conclusions and recommendations resulting from the discussions and the contributions from all the participants, is now available as a JRC Scientific and Policy Report.
- wholeSEM particularly welcomes PhD contributions to the conference by having a dedicated poster session to showcase PhD student research into building or linking energy models. This is a great opportunity for PhD students to present their research to leading experts in industry and academia. Successful applicants will receive a free place to attend the whole conference and will be eligible for travel and accommodation bursaries. - Scottish government has invited proposals to develop a national energy system model See details.
- The ADVANCE project has issued an open call for participation in a community study on model diagnostics. The ADVANCE Diagnostics study aims to characterize and compare the behavior of energy-economy and integrated assessment models based on a set of diagnostic scenarios and indicators. You will find a more complete description of the ADVANCE activity, including its scope and protocol. If your modeling team is interested in participating in the ADVANCE model diagnostics activity, please contact either Elmar Kriegler or Volker Krey. Instructions on how to participate can be found at here. Also note that all teams participating in the ADVANCE study must submit their first diagnostic scenarios by 11 March 2015.
- Call for Abstracts for the International BE4 Workshop: Including Behaviour in Energy/Engineering/Economy/Environment models. The aim of the workshop is to bring together energy system researchers with expertise and interest in representing behaviour in whole-system energy/economy/engineering/environment (E4) models. The Workshop is co-funded by ETSAP and WholeSEM. More details can be found here.
The whole systems energy modelling consortium (wholeSEM), led by University College London, is launching an innovative bi-directional Fellowship Programme to enable modelling experts to work in the UK with the wholeSEM consortium. The application process is detailed at here. The first Call for Fellows submission date is 30th May 2014.
The European Commission has launched a selection procedure to set up a database of over 3000 successful candidates with a research background at post-doc level. They will be placed on a reserve list and called for interview according to the needs of the services. More info: here.
- Since January 1, 2012, George Giannakidis of the Greek Centre for Renewable Energy sources is the new Operating Agent of IEA-ETSAP and GianCarlo Tosato remains IEA-ETSAP project head.
- In Lisbon, Portugal from 12-14 December 2012 after the next ETSAP workshop. Registration is now closed.
- In Curitiba (Parana – Brazil) from 22 to 25 October. The course will take place if at least 5 participants will be registered and confirmed the registration by the end of August.
- In Cape Town (South Africa), hosted by the Energy Research Centre of the University of Cape Town, before the next IEA-ETSAP semi-annual meetings, both VEDA-TIMES and ANSWER-TIMES training courses will be held (in parallel) on Wednesday to Friday, June 13-15. - The first draft factsheets of the IEA-ETSAP Energy Technology Data Source are now posted here.
- Tetra Tech wishes to engage a Subcontractor to develop a regional energy systems model that builds on existing single-country energy systems models that USAID’s E&E Bureau has already supported. The regional model will cover the EC Contracting Parties, including interactions with neighboring energy systems (details and Q&A)
- Next intermediate / advanced level training course on TIMES-VEDA will be hosted by IFE in Oslo (Norway) on January 23-25, 2012 (Monday to Wednesday).

- Next base level training course on TIMES-VEDA will be held in Athens (Greece), on November 10-12, back to back to the regular IEA-ETSAP workshop. The training workshop is implemented with the cooperation of the EU-GCC Clean Energy Network.

- ETSAP mourns the sudden and untimely demise of Dr. Leo Schrattenholzer. The next meeting will be dedicated to his memory.

- ETSAP is now officially involved in the activities of the Consortium of Integrated Assessment Modeling Communities founded by International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Austria), Energy Modeling Forum (EMF, Stanford) and National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES, Japan).
- Spring 2009 Workshop Draft Program available here: Venice (Italy), June 16, jointly with IEW that will be held on June 17-19. The Executive Committee meeting will be held Tuesday afternoon, June 16.
- Next training on technical-economic modeling with the TIMES model generator will be held in Venezia (Italy) on June 12, 13 and 15, before IEW2009. On request the program can be slightly adapted. The course costs 1200 euro and is limited to 8-10 participants. If you want to attend, send your coordinates to ETSAP.
- The Polytechnic University of Turin (Italy) is offering a research grant for collaboration in research activities in the energy analysis and modelling sector, related to the European Project REACCESS – Risk of Energy Availability: Common Corridors for Europe Supply Security. - Next ETSAP workshop and Executive Committee meeting will be held in Paris, at the IEA headquarters, on July 3-4, 2008, back to back with the IEW. For getting the badge necessary to attend the meetings, please register here.
- A Getting started guide for TIMES-VEDA is now available. It is intended to support new users who start modeling with TIMES and VEDA. It illustrates in great detail a very simple tutorial model that can be downloaded and run. It explains in some detail the DEMO model that is installed with VEDA. It also includes a primer in energy systems analysis. Please send you comments and corrections to this first draft to Maurizio Gargiulo to contribute to a better second draft.
- On January 1, 2008, Annex XI has started: here. It will promote Joint Studies for New and Mitigated Energy Systems. The first to sign have been Norway and the Netherlands that resume full participation. Other interested parties are invited to join by sending to the IEA the Letter with the intention to participate.

- Latest issue of the Newsletter (June 2007) is now available here. It describes some advanced features of TIMES (climate module, multi-stage stochastics and the myopic version), VEDA front-end interface for TIMES and some early applications of the TIMES model.
- Next ETSAP workshop (Final Program here will be held in Brasilia in the week November 19-23, back to back with Brazil-IEA/NEET workshop. It will include 2-3 days of training on ETSAP tools. The Hotel Gran Bittar, where the workshop will be held, offers special rates to the participants who register before November 10 with the attached form. - Next ETSAP workshop will be held jointly with IEW 2007 at the Stanford University (California), June 25-29 2007 (Draft Program here). The Executive Committee will be held on June 28.
- The upcoming semi-annual workshop (Stuttgart, Nov 28 – Dec 01) will focus on the global 15-region TIMES Integrated Assessment Model and its use. It will also offer a 2-day training course (free of charge) on the use of the TIMES model generator, with the VEDA interface (see Agenda here.)

- Licensed MARKAL/TIMES users are entitled to purchase IEA energy balances and statistics at a 50% discount.
- ETSAP is thankful to the past desk officer, Mr. Fridtjof Unander, who returns to Norway after having strongly promoted ETSAP tools at the IEA secretariat for seven years and used them for preparing the global scenarios of the Energy Technology Perspective 2006, recently issued by the IEA, and welcomes the new desk officer, Mr. Peter Taylor, former deputy chair of ETSAP Executive Committee.
- The Executive Committee graciously accepted the offer of Professor Voss for the next ETSAP in Stuttgart November 27 – December 1, 2006. It foresees a 1-2 days meeting with the EC funded NEEDS project – research stream on member state and pan-EU TIMES models, a 1-day workshop with German modelling teams, the Executive Committee meeting and a special visit to the new Daimler/Chrysler museum. Presentations have to be proposed to gct@etsap.org by Monday, November 6, 2006.
- Proceedings of the ETSAP workshop held in Cape Town (South Africa) in the period June 27 – July 1, 2006, jointly with the 25th International Energy Workshop, organized by IIASA, EMF (Stanford), the IEA and the Energy Research Centre of the University of Cape Town are now available here.
- After the approval of the G8 Gleneagles Communique, the IEA has undertaken a Plan of Work that aims at identifying strategies towards cleaner, clever and competitive energy systems. This undertaking includes the 5+ countries (China, India, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa) that have signed the G8 Gleneagles Communique and other developing countries. ETSAP has proposed several activities and has carried out a special half a day workshop with experts from Brazil, China, India and South Africa as a part of the Cape Town workshop (see proceedings).
- The ETSAP and wider modeling community pay tribute to Professor Alan Manne, Operations Research trailblazer, father of MARKAL-MACRO and highly respected global Climate Change modeler, and Olev Liik a leading promoter of energy system planning using the ETSAP Tools in the Baltics. They will be missed but not forgotten.
- TIMES version 2 has been released. This has several important enhancements including multi-stage stochastic formulation. See the documentation section for details.
- The access to ETSAP tools has been simplified (see here.) The MARKAL-TIMES model generators are provided free of charge.
- The Fall-2005 workshop will be held in Oxford, UK, from Nov. 15-18. Information available here.
- Annex X (2005-7) “Global Energy Systems and Common Analyses – Climate friendly, Secure and Productive Energy Systems” entered into force at the beginning of March.

- The Project Head presented a paper titled Mathematical Tools for Economic Programming Energy Models at the IEA – Ad Hoc Group on Science and Energy Technologies meeting in Berlin, Nov 8-9, 2004.
- The Executive Committee held in Paris Friday June 25, 2004, appointed Mr. Hertsel Labib (NRCan) new chair of ETSAP. The delegates expressed words of thanks to Mr. Phillip Tseng, who chaired the committee for more than four years, wishing him success in his new position at the US Energy Information Administration.
- The Energy Technology Collaboration Division Head, Dr. Antonio Pflueger, communicated that “the IEA Committee on Energy Research and Technology (CERT) has agreed to extend the term of ETSAP for a period of five years, i.e. until 30 June 2009”.
- The End-of-term Report of the 7th Annex of ETSAP (1999-2004) is now available here. (Revised April 20, 2004).
- The text of the Implementing Agreement has been revised and is available here.
- Run tests of large scale multi-regional TIMES model instances have been completed by ETSAP research Uwe Remne from IER (Germany). The tests establish the feasibility of running large TIMES instances on personal computers.

- 18.01.2002: Newsletter Vol. 7, No. 7, January 2002 is now available here.
- 18.01.2002: Energy and Materials Policy Design (EMP) site. Dolf Gielen, known from the MATTER project has developed a new website http://www.resourcemodels.org. The site contains model code, data, results and reports for a number of models that have been designed during the last year for energy and materials policy design. Basically these models constitute simplified versions of MARKAL, with focus on interregional trade, carbon leakage, fringe benefits and simulation of market behaviour. Also the most recent study analyses the energy and CO2 effects of leisure and tourism, an extension to the service industry.
